Illness
& Disease - What's Constitutes a Quarantine?
Quarantine,
is a term used to describe the process of keeping an animal away from
all other animals for a period of time long enough to recognize, diagnose,
and treat any diseases the animal may have. The goal of a quarantine
is to prevent outside illnesses from entering a collection, any time
you aquire a new snake, you should quarantine it for at least 40 days.
For the
quarantine to be effective, the diseases that animal may or may not
have must also be kept away from other animals - this means decontaminating
yourself before going from one snake/cage to another and making sure
the quarantine enclosure is far enough away so that no parasites or
other disease vectors can travel to the other animals. The suspect
animal should be completely isolated from other animals until you
are 100% certain all diseases have been eradicated.
